eBooks using the Kindle App

Kindle App for tablets, IPads, and smartphones

The Kindle app is available for computers, tablets, and mobile devices. You can only view Kindle format ebooks using the Kindle app; it is not capable of playing audiobooks.

Getting Started:

You must have an internet connection to download eBooks.
  1. If you do not have an Amazon account, go to Amazon to create one.
  2. Downloading the app:
    • To download the Kindle app onto a computer click here or choose Kindle E-readers and Books from the Departments menu on Amazon.com.
    • To download the Kindle app onto an android device click here or search for the Amazon Kindle App in the app store on your device.
    • To download the Kindle app onto an iPhone or iPad click here or search for the Kindle App by AMZN Mobile in the iTunes store on your device.
  3. Type in your Amazon login when the Kindle app asks for it.

Downloading a Kindle eBook:

  1. Go to Library on the Go!
  2. You can also access Library on the Go! from our website under Digital Resources or through Monmouth County Library at monmouth.lib.overdrive.com.
  3. Sign In at the top right corner of the Library on the Go! page. Type in your Little Silver library card number (without spaces) and click/tap Sign In.
  4. To search, type in the title you are looking for into the search box and click/tap the magnifying glass. You can also browse eBooks by genre
Checking Out eBooks
eBooks that are available for checkout will have a bolded book icon in the upper right hand corner of the cover.
  1. To check out a title:
    • For Computers: Bring the mouse over the cover of the eBook. Click Borrow to check out.
    • For Tablets and Mobile Devices: Tap on the cover, then tap Borrow to check out.
  2. Click/tap Download and select Kindle.
  3. Click/tap Confirm and Download.
    • You will be redirected to the Amazon website.
    • If you share your computer/device with someone else, make sure that you are logged into Amazon.
  4. Double check where the Kindle eBook will be delivered, and click/tap Get Library Book.
    • If you are not signed into your Amazon account, you will be prompted to sign in and select the eBook’s destination on the next screen.
  5. Your eBook should be delivered to your computer or device.
  6. Open the Kindle app to read the eBook.
  7. eBooks that are unavailable have a gray book icon in the top right corner of the cover.
Placing a Hold on an eBook
eBooks that are unavailable for checkout will have a grayed out book icon in the upper right hand corner of the cover.
  1. To place a hold on the title:
    • For Computers: Bring the mouse over the cover of the ebook. Click on Place a Hold to join the waiting list.
    • For Tablets and Mobile Devices: Tap on the cover, then tap Place a Hold to join the waiting list.
  2. When the book is available for you, you will receive an email notification.
    • You will have 3 days to check the book out before you lose your place in line (unless you have automatic checkout).

Returning a Kindle Ebook:

eBooks will automatically return themselves after the checkout period has ended; however, you will need to remove the information for the title from your device.
Removing titles from your device 
  1. Sign in to your Amazon.com account.
  2. Click/tap Your Account.
  3. Under Digital Content, click/tap on Manage Your Content and Devices.
    • Amazon will list the titles you have on your account.
  4. Find the title you would like to remove and click/tap the check mark to the left of the title.
  5. Click/tap Delete
Returning Titles Early
  1. Sign in to your Amazon.com account.
  2. Click/tap Your Account.
  3. Under Digital Content, click/tap on Manage Your Content and Devices.
    • Amazon will list the titles you have on your account.
    • eBooks borrowed from the library will be marked Borrowed.
  4. Find the title you would like to return and click/tap the ellipsis (. . .) in the Actions column
  5. Click/tap Return this book.
  6. Confirm by clicking/tapping Yes.
